A Bavarian Christmas In Georgia

Christmas this year did not go as planned but such is life. One must adapt or drown in self pity and frustration.

We adapted.

With Christmas weekend now free, we decided to spend it in Helen, Georgia allowing us a shorter drive to my friends' retirement home where we would be joining her for part of the long weekend.

Helen is a beautiful beautiful town situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia where all of the buildings in the town proper must have a Bavarian style to them.

Excited to walk around town after dark to see the lights, we hurriedly left after work on Friday and drove to our Airbnb. Stepping out of the Jeep, we could immediately see our breath as cold shivers swept through our bodies.

It was 13 degrees out.

Undeterred, we settled into our temporary home until it was time for dinner with the full intention of seeing some sights tonight.

Dinner was, of course, a delicious one of the German variety with schnitzel and red cabbage at the Hofbrauhaus.

Then it was time to face the biting cold...we made it about a block.

13 degrees is very cold to be walking around in. Still, plenty of pretty lights to see.

There was even a lovely park lit up on the short drive back to our Airbnb.

The following day was marginally warmer but with the sun shining brightly in a clear blue sky at least it was tolerable to be out. December 24th found us up and searching for coffee before most people were out wandering the streets. By noon though Helen was bustling with tourists trying to get their last minute shopping done.

A couple of hours spent wandering in and out of stores and then it was time to head to the retirement home to spend a quiet Christmas eve with my friend.

Helen is one of my favorite places in Georgia to visit (I've been here a couple of times over the years). I'm glad to see it hasn't lost its charm.
