Birthday by Air, Sea, and Land

What's it like to fly in a metal can, with no sides, held aloft by a couple pieces of metal? Today I got to find out. My wonderful wife decided to surprise me for my birthday, even if it was a few days early. Since we wanted to do a day around Providence, Rhode Island, this is where my birthday extravaganza wowed me.

Air Today, Gone Tomorrow

I've never flown in a helicopter before. In fact, neither of us have. Today became that first. Marsha opted for doors off, which was surprising considering she is always telling me she is afraid of heights.

However, despite being able to look straight down at the water or ground below us, especially during banking, it really didn't seem to bother her at all. I thought it was just a blast. The flight was smooth, the weather couldn't have been better, and the pilot was knowledgeable and great to talk with. I would definitely be up for doing another flight.

After a safe landing and departure from the bay, along with so many houses we couldn't begin to afford, we headed back towards Providence proper. We had one stop to make first. We've started visiting different warships, and today added a couple more to our collection. This include a Battleship, PT Boat, another submarine and a frigate.

Onwards, to the third adventure. It was now time to explore the downtown of Providence. First we needed a bite to eat, and we just happened to park next an upscale Korean restaurant. I haven't had Kimchi Jjigae in quite a few months, and this did not disappoint in the least.

The rest of our time was wandering shops, looking at architecture in this beautiful city, and overall enjoying the great vibes we were feeling from the city. It is really a very friendly place, with a very accepting culture.

Overall it was one of my favorite days celebrating my trip around the sun. Providence, and its surrounding area, will be a favorite of mine and I look forward to a return trip.
