Corset making! For the third time…or is it the fourth?

UPDATE!

Finally! It’s finally over! My evening sew while you watch TV to alleviate guilt for just sitting around project is done! Finished. Finito. And it only took like 8 months.

The corset fits well enough, although as I have a long torso, the next one I make will be a couple inches longer to improve the fit. I’m really happy with how this turned out, maybe the next one I make will be completed in under 6 months…you never know, it could happen.

Original post

Last year I decided I needed more corsets and being me, I decided I would make my own because, well, why buy it if I can make some the way I want. This it is turns out, is not as easy as it seems. My first couple of attempts were…let’s call them learning experiences. I seriously did not plan on making a corset only someone with Barbie’s bust size could wear (note, I am nowhere close to being built like Barbie). As is only proper, I over compensated on my second attempt and made it waaaayyyy to small. I went from Barbie to Skipper.

I took a break after that.

Sometime around the holidays I decided to try again because next to having crafting ADD, my superpower is not giving up…even if I should. This time, and I honestly can’t remember if there was another attempt before this one which I blacked out from memory, I feel like there might have been. This time the sizing was correct but I became distracted with other projects so my corset was laid to the side until a few weeks ago. After wrapping the grommets, I realized my ability to line up fabric was in question. It turns out I left some gaping between two of the bones. Sigh.

Corset Oops

I was about ready to say “screw it. I’ll just wear this under other clothing” when my determination kicked in, I really wanted to get this right. So I rummaged through my trim drawer to see what I could do to cover up the mistake when I discovered some forgotten trim I removed from another project (reuse when possible!)

Trim

It needed to be cleaned up a bit, the center pearls were cheap plastic and had been washed repeatedly, leaving only a white form to suggest what they had been. The outside pearls are glass and still usable for another project so those have been put back into the beading area of my craft room.

So far I have four lines of trim attached with several more to go. This is more work than I was originally planning for this project. When I started this round I was thinking of a simple fabric corset but I’m loving how the trim is looking on it and have decided I made a happy goof.
