Exploring Floridian Caves

Since my son showed me Triple Aught's quests, I've been dying to try one. Last Sunday we were finally able to. My quest is still, almost a week later, pending approval through them so I don't know if we were right, but honestly I don't care. We had an amazing day exploring the Citrus Wildlife Management Area and Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park in Florida.

We set out in morning searching for caves. I'm from the West Coast, caves to me means walking into the side of a mountain...that's not what we found in Florida. I kept referring to them as sinkholes but truthfully, they were caves, just not the kind I'm familiar with.

But let's be real...this is how adventures begin. By finding a hole in the ground beneath a tree.

Yup, find a hole in the ground with large rocks creating enough open space for you to fit.

Yes, the four pictures below are of the same place and I am standing in the opening in the first one.

Apparently, you can go deeper into some of the caves, we're not that adventurous though.

We only look like we are.

And yes, these caves have experienced some artistic folks, the most decorated one is called Vandal cave. While I don't normally like graffiti in the wild, I must admit to finding Vandal cave pretty and interesting.

There's only so much time you can spend in here though without delving deeper into darkness so after a long walk through woods, we spent the rest of our fading afternoon at the nearby Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park.

This state park is also a refuge center for animals who can't be released back into the wild. Except for a number of the birds, they bribe those to hang out. With a well maintained boardwalk meandering through the different enclosures, it's a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours.

Not a bad way to end the weekend.
