Is the city really eternal or does it just take that long to experience it?

Writer's picture: MarshaMarsha

That may not be an age old question but it should be.

In the 1st century BC a Roman poet named Tibullus called Rome the Urbs Aeterna, the Eternal City, and the name stuck. Understandably so, who wouldn't want to believe their beloved city could endure against time itself.

Tradition has it Rome was founded on April 21, 753 BC. It's old but it's not what is considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. That honor falls to Damascus, Syria which is believed to have been founded between 10,000 and 8,000 BC.

For those who want another tidbit of useless historical knowledge before the pictures, April 21 was made a national holiday during fascist rule in Italy.

Port number two of our trip was Rome. Rome was a train ride away from Vision of the Seas and her port, but at least we all had seats for it.

You can not experience all of Rome in a single day. The city itself covers 496 square miles.

We barely made it through the Colosseum (it was so crowded).

The forum and it's surrounding area. There are so many ruins, buildings, and statues almost on top of each other it's impossible to take them all in without constant stopping and a lot more time.

We ended with a quick trip to the Vatican. Literally quick. It was a 10 minute stop to see the courtyard area before wandering off to find our train home.

All I have to say thank goodness for digital cameras because...wow, so many pictures.

Guess we'll just have to make another trip here.

One of the fun things about cruises is their themed nights. Although it does mean packing more items than one might have wanted to. Day two was White Night for dinner. We had off white and linen colors but close enough.
