The Fort Worth Before Halloween

Cowboys, Steers and Werewolves, oh my! We like to pick a fun location to spend Halloween at each year. Last year was Sleepy Hollow, to find the elusive headless horseman. This year, because of traveling circumstances, we weren't going to allow us to go somewhere as recognizable. We'd heard good things about the Fort Worth Stockyards and since it would be along the route we needed to go, we chose building a trip around the old west Halloween.

Since Halloween was on a Monday night, we decided to start the night of hauntings with the various activities in the area for the weekend. The one that had us most excited was that the Dios de Los Muertos celebration was planned for Saturday, with a big parade and festival. It was not meant to be though, as the day/night before heavy thunderstorms ravaged the area, causing the celebration to be postponed to the following Saturday, for which we wouldn't be able to go.

Time for plan B. We started with the Boo at the Fort Worth Zoo. With a little mild sprinkling going on and cooler than normal weather, the animals we active and it was fun seeing the costumes of the kids. Plus they had a fun Star Wars themed animal show.

Our next stop was downtown Forth Worth. A beautiful honoring of the Day of the Dead greeted us. The architecture was beautiful as well.

The evening was finished with a murder mystery dinner, which was a lot of fun. The detectives were very interactive, and we must have been doing something right as they kept coming back to interact with Marsha and I, which ended up with Marsha being grilled in the center of the room. She threw the actors off by boldly sitting reverse style, which left them speechless and sputtering for a moment, much to the delight of the crowd.

Finally, All Hallows Night had arrived. Dressed in our finest, we travelled to the old west in search of some monsters to kill. Or party with, really it could go either way. The Stockyards are just what they're named, but now a throwback to an older day. There are shops, hotels, restaurants, actors, mazes, horseback riding and more.

We enjoyed going through the maze, made out of an old cattle pen, with walls that can be switched to create new paths. Got to ride a longhorn steer, see a old west shootout with a werewolf, people watch and ended the night with a great steak dinner. Because what else says the west than a big ole slab of beef.

Another fun year, and already excited about where Halloween 2023 will be taking us. Let's just say there may be a little voodoo magic involved.
