The Unsinkable and the Fighting Lady

With only one day to go into Charleston, we decided to pay a visit to two awesome warships from the 40s. Meet "The Ship That Would Not Die" or the USS Laffey.

USS Laffey

On April 15th, 1945 the USS Laffey was the subject of a Japanese attack. It was hit by 4 bombs and 6 kamikaze planes and lots of strafing fire that killed 32 and wounded 71. However, despite explosions and being on fire the ship stayed afloat and held off the attackers in an amazing feat. She also carried this fun recon drone, almost large enough to ride on.

Another ship that started in WWII, who went on to fight for many years including in the Vietnam War. Give welcome to the USS Yorktown. She was also the subject of the movie "The Fighting Lady".

The Yorktown had quite a few types of aircraft over the years.

Our day didn't end there though. With the afternoon hours waning, we decided for a little macabre lunch at Poe's Tavern.

And ended the day visiting the Fort Moultrie, which also overlooks Fort Sumter in the bay entrance.

I'll end with this, the giant bird trying to eat the flying wind surfer.
