We're Here. Now What?

We did a lot of things during our stay at Big Bend National Park.

So many things.

Horseback Riding

We spent Christmas evening enjoying a sunset horseback ride near where we were staying.

I always thought mules were smaller, sure footed, delightfully stubborn creatures and that was it. I was wrong. Turns out some rather large donkeys are bred with large horses such as Belgians thus creating the Belgian Mule, a beast that can stand up to 18 hands high.

It was this type of cutie Dave got to ride on our outing.

A big equine for a big man.

My horse, on the other hand, was a bit of a racist...she didn't like the mule breeds and kept trying to nip any that came near us. It made for an interesting ride.

The ride would have been beautiful by itself but it was a full moon night. Watching the moon rise over the neighboring cliffs was magical.

River Rafting

While the Rio Grande was not so grande when we were visiting, we still wanted to raft it. Being the last minute couple that we are, the options to were limited. We found ourselves going on an early afternoon trip.

Afternoon was perfect. The morning was a little chilly but by the time we rode the tour bus into Big Bend Ranch State Park the sun was out and the temperature was rising. Yes, there is a state park as well as national park and they are different in appearance. It's worth visiting both.

Fortunately, the day continued to warm up since we rafted through Dark Canyon. A stunning place in which sunlight doesn't penetrate the cliffs keeping the place in perpetual shadow. It's a tad cool.

This was an easy, relaxing time on the water and so enjoyable.

Santa Elena Canyon

While not a tour, if you visit Big Bend National Park, you must hike Santa Elena Canyon. The towering cliffs blatantly tell you how small you are.

With a very steep initial incline, the trail can seem daunting but have no fear once you survive those hair turn ramps upward, the view is spectacular, the rest of the walk enchanting, and you'll be glad you did.

There is so much to see and do in this area. Big Bend is an out of the way must see destination.
