Most of my experience with food competitions is usually attributed to many seasons of Iron Chef and a multitude of other shows from the Food Network. So I wasn't sure how visiting a real competition in the World Food Championships was going to compare. Here is our experience in Dallas, with the Burger and Steak championships.
We were pleasantly surprised by several things. Too many times in the past I've seen things labeled as "world" only to find out it is really more local. In this case there really were several teams from around the world, including Dubai, France and Japan. And that was just for the Burger final 10 competition.
It was more entertaining that I thought it might be. After so many drama enticed tv shows I kind of expected it to be a little on the boring side. Instead we got to walk around the cook stations, usually within about 10 feet of them, making guesses as to what the competitors were trying to accomplish based on what ingredients they had out and what techniques they were using.
Then there was the judging. We got to see beautiful plates of food, brought up to be eaten not only by the local celebrity judges but by any with an E.A.T. certification. I think if I get a chance to go back, I will definitely work on getting certified, so I can taste those beautiful dishes.
Just like on TV, we did end up seeing a couple of competitors running to deliver their delicacies at the last second. With one, this ended up sending food flying across the table as they slammed down their tray. At least they made it.
We got to see two of the many competitions over the several days. I could probably spend a lot more time here than Marsha, but this is exciting to me. I definitely want to go back in the future and spend more time and maybe even hang around for the awards.
